Transition Pathways to Zero-Emission Fuels

The Energy transition is on its way – transforming an economy based on fossil fuels to one based on renewables. In this transition hydrogen is seen as a missing link between renewable generation, generating electricity whenever wind blows or sun shines – and consumption.

To make the European economy more environmentally friendly, a lot of solar and wind projects will be built in the coming years. Storage and efficient use of the produced green electricity will become increasingly crucial for an efficient, renewable energy system. Zero-emission fuels could offer the solution.

The pathway towards fossil-free fuels requires a large-scale renewable energy source, for example large solar farms in Southern Europe, North Africa or from Off-shore Wind the North or Baltic Sea

Our Action

THRUST aims to accelerate the transition towards a zero-emission maritime transport sector, an ambition also proclaimed by the International Maritime Organization .

Together with top-universities we are analysing how transition pathways for ‘electro-‘ fuels made from renewable electricity could look like. This includes research on different alternative fuels as well as required infrastructure and business cases in various scenarios, locations and applications.

Among other things, THRUST is co-funding a PhD researcher at University College London (UCL) to research the potential transition pathways.
